First Lady's Nutrition Labeling Announcement Expected To Anger Industry

First lady Michelle Obama is slated to announce the most sweeping update to nutrition labeling on food packages in more than two decades on Thursday — and Americans are in for a reality check about how many calories and how much sugar they are consuming.

Food policy experts say the bold announcement is expected to anger the food industry. Mandating that food companies list exactly how much sugar they add to products on the nutrition label, for example, is a thorny issue that is likely to rile up fierce food and beverage industry opposition in the coming weeks.

DreamWorks Under Fire for Letting 'Madagascar' Characters Peddle Junk Food

DreamWorks Animation is renting out the lovable images of Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, and Melman the Giraffe to market nutritionally poor food choices to impressionable young children, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest.  In a letter to DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, the nonprofit nutrition watchdog group urged the studio to set nutrition standards for the foods for which it licenses its characters, much in the way Disney did last month.

FOODIE FACTOID: Broccoli

Broccoli has excellent cancer-fighting properties. It is a particularly rich source of a phytochemical called sulforaphane, which is a natural chemical that stimulates our bodies to produce enzymes and destroy carcinogens.  Broccoli is a fantastic source of vitamin C (more than an orange!), a good source of calcium, and other essential minerals including iron, folic acid, selenium and potassium.
