The laboratory corn is so strong that farmers are resorting to kevlar, the material used in bullet-proof vests, for their tractor tires!
Farmers might see fewer crops lost to bugs and drought, but they’ll pay for it in farm equipment - tires cost, on average, a couple of a hundred dollars apiece. Mark Newhall, editor of Farm Show magazine, says that the stalks are so tough that “when you cut them off to harvest them, it’s like having a field of little spears.”
Scorching heat and little rain across the US has blasted the country’s corn and soybean crops, and forced the USDA to make its largest downward revision to estimate for a corn crop in a quarter of a century. The US is the largest exporter of corn, soybeans and wheat, and therefore crucial to supplying the world with food.
