The Mutant Strength of GMO Corn:  Even if GMO corn were safe on all other fronts (and research suggests it’s not), using the uber-tough corn is a calculated risk.  Super-strong corn stalks are wreaking havoc on tractor tires by poking into their surfaces.  The laboratory corn is so strong that farmers are resorting to kevlar, the material used in bullet-proof vests, for their tractor tires! Farmers might see fewer crops lost to bugs and drought, but they’ll pay for it in farm equipment - tires cost, on average, a couple of a hundred dollars apiece.  Mark Newhall, editor of Farm Show magazine, says that the stalks are so tough that “when you cut them off to harvest them, it’s like having a field of little spears.”

VEGAN DAILY FACTOIDS: Popcorn

  • Popcorn has more polyphenols (a class of antioxidants) than many fruits and vegetables.  A serving of popcorn has about 300 mg of polyphenols compared to 160 mg per serving for fruits.  Popcorn is also 100 percent unprocessed whole grain.
  • Those annoying little popcorn hulls that get stuck in your teeth actually have the highest concentrations of polyphenols and fiber. 
  • You’ll get the most nutritional mileage out of your popcorn if you air-pop it yourself (microwave popcorn has twice the calories of air-popped, and kernels popped in oil have double that many).  Air poppers like these are very inexpensive but very effective!
  • Always use organic corn kernels, otherwise you will be eating corn from a genetically-modified seed.

NY Times: Corn for Food, Not Fuel

  • The 2012 drought has now parched about 60 percent of the contiguous 48 states. As a result, global food prices are rising steeply. 
  • More than one-third of our corn crop is used to feed livestock. Another 13 percent is exported, much of it to feed livestock as well. Another 40 percent is used to produce ethanol. The remainder goes toward food and beverage production.
  • By suspending renewable-fuel standards that were unwise from the start, the Environmental Protection Agency could divert vast amounts of corn from inefficient ethanol production back into the food chain, where market forces and common sense dictate it should go.

Food Crisis Fears As US Corn Price Soars

Scorching heat and little rain across the US has blasted the country’s corn and soybean crops, and forced the USDA to make its largest downward revision to estimate for a corn crop in a quarter of a century.  The US is the largest exporter of corn, soybeans and wheat, and therefore crucial to supplying the world with food.
