Founded in 1989, Animal Place is one of the oldest and largest sanctuaries for farmed animals in the country. Nestled on 600-acres in Grass Valley, CA, Animal Place provides refuge to hundreds of neglected farmed animals.  The 300 animals at the refuge are permanent residents.

Animals arrive from small and large farms, slaughterhouses, research facilities, and neglect or cruelty cases. Ian Somerhalder Secures Land for Animal Sanctuary

This sanctuary will bring together bullied animals and bullied kids to help heal one another. The Ian Somerhalder Foundation writes on their site, “ISF intends on creating a safe haven for all the outcasted [sic] animals that have been neglected, mistreated and ultimately misunderstood. Some may see the potential in an abused animal as ending at the animal’s personal rehabilitation. In our eyes, this is just the beginning. What if ISF provided opportunities for these misfit creatures to continue their emotional journey alongside others who were hurting from a life filled with dejection?

California Slaughterhouse Allowed To Reopen After Cow Cruelty Video

A slaughterhouse in California’s central agricultural heartland was allowed to reopen on Monday after agreeing to improve its handling of animals following a graphic video that showed cows being mistreated there, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.

“The company has committed to a number of corrective actions including additional humane handling training for employees and safeguards to ensure that only ambulatory animals are processed,” an agency spokesman said in an email.

Tiger Escapes, Kills Keeper In German Zoo

A tiger escaped its enclosure at Cologne Zoo in western Germany on Saturday and killed a female keeper before being shot dead by the zoo’s director, police said.

The tiger slipped through a passage between the enclosure and an adjacent storage building, where it fatally attacked the 43-year-old keeper.

Victory! Baby Elephant To Be Taken Away From Abusers

There is exciting news about Sunder, an abused baby elephant who has captured the hearts of people worldwide, including Paul McCartney. Thanks to the ceaseless work of PETA India and PETA-supported Animal Rahat, Indian officials today issued an order that Sunder - who is covered with wounds from beatings and whose eye was injured with a bullhook - is to be taken from the temple where he has been held captive in spiked chains and placed in the custody of the forestry department.

At the end of last month, Paul McCartney stopped an Olympic rehearsal and sent a plea to the Indian Forest Minister, asking him to secure the release of an abused young elephant named Sunder.   Now, PETA India has obtained new photographic evidence of the abuse that the elephant is enduring while being used as a living begging bowl and beaten by a vicious, inept young trainer.
