838,000 Acres To Be Protected For American Jaguars

Fantastic news for jaguars! The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service last Friday formally proposed to protect 838,232 acres - an area larger than the state of Rhode Island - as “critical habitat” for endangered jaguars in southern Arizona and New Mexico.

Over 14,500 Care2 members signed a petition asking the Department of Interior to implement their pledge to protect jaguars and their habitat. The petition sought protected habitat in the U.S. for jaguars, and to develop a recovery plan to save these incredible cats.

Although jaguars are often thought of as tropical creatures, these amazing cats used to roam the Southwestern United States.  Like the gray wolf, jaguars were driven from the United States by federal and state predator-killing programs. But just recently, two jaguar sightings were confirmed in southern Arizona!

KittyCam Technology Reveals How Much Wildlife Is Killed By Outdoor Cats

• The results of the study showed that of the 60 cats wearing the cameras, 30% captured and killed prey with an average of one kill for every 17 hours spent outside, or 2.1 kills per week.
• The study also showed that cats bring home less than one quarter of their kills, so owners aren’t fully aware of just what kind of slaughter is going on in their own yards.
• It is estimated that cat predation is one of the reasons why one in three American bird species are in decline.

Take Action: End Black Bear And Bobcat Hunting In California

• California voters have expressed their views against mountain lion hunting in two statewide ballot measures in 1990 and 1996. While mountain lions are protected from the cruelty of hound hunting, other predators are not. California does not currently prohibit hound hunting of black bear and bobcats.
• Hounding is an inhumane and unsporting practice where trophy hunters use packs of radio-collared dogs to chase down bears and bobcats before the hunter shoots the terrified animal off a tree branch.
• Please take a minute and submit the form at this link to automatically send a brief, polite message of support to your state assembly member to encourage them to support SB 1221 and put a stop to the inhumane hound hunting of bears and bobcats in California.

One more reason to consider dogs ‘man’s best friend!’ New study finds that babies living in a home with a dog were generally healthier, suffered fewer respiratory and inner ear infections, and required fewer antibiotics in their first year of life. Cats also provided some protection, but the effects were much stronger in dogs.
