VEGAN DAILY FACTOID: Kiwifruit
Even though it has a larger size and an outer skin with fuzz, the kiwifruit is really a berry. In fact, kiwis were originally known as Chinese gooseberries. Kiwis aren’t bothered by very many irritants, so crops don’t require much pest control. Kiwifruit is a rich source of vitamin C, and has almost as much potassium as a banana. Kiwifruit is often reported to have mild laxative effects, due to its significant levels of dietary fiber. Once a kiwifruit is ripe, it is preserved optimally when stored far from other fruits, as it is very sensitive to the ethylene gas they may emit, thereby tending to over-ripen even in the refrigerator. If stored appropriately, ripe kiwifruit normally keep for about one to two weeks.
